A Unique Underwater Experience for Expecting Mothers
When Vanessa was looking for a maternity photographer, she wanted maternity photos that stood out from typical offerings in Cairns. She found something truly special – underwater maternity photography by Angelina Pilarinos Photography. She was nervous about being awkward in front of the camera and wasn’t sure she’d be able to open her eyes underwater. But she was drawn to the idea of photos that captured her pregnancy in a way that felt true to her.
I rent the pool at Herb’s Training & Swim School for my underwater maternity photoshoots. It’s private, safe, and comfortable, which helps my clients relax and enjoy the experience.
Vanessa’s Underwater Maternity Shoot Story
Pregnancy hadn’t been easy on Vanessa’s body, but she still wanted beautiful photos to remember this time. She preferred full-body and profile shots rather than close-ups or straight-on poses – which works perfectly with underwater photography since the side view really highlights the shape of pregnancy.
Our session began with a safety briefing to help Vanessa feel comfortable. We practiced breathing techniques, and I showed her different poses which she quickly mastered. Despite her usual camera shyness, Vanessa fully embraced the experience, showing how the right environment can make all the difference.
She found opening her eyes underwater became easier with practice, but honestly, some of the most stunning images were with her eyes closed. The water lifted the weight of pregnancy from her body, giving her comfort during our 3-hour session with plenty of breaks.
After the shoot, Vanessa used the on-site showers while I packed up. The next day, we met to review her images, and she chose her favorite 14 photos which I edited and delivered two weeks later. Her friends and family were blown away by how different and beautiful the photos were!
For her session, Vanessa rented a beautiful robe from Mama Rentals (I offer my clients discount codes for their services). Mama Rentals even featured her photos on their Instagram – a special touch for Vanessa’s first pregnancy.

The rented pool at Herb’s Training and Swim School offers a private setting where you can feel at ease. The facility includes clean changing rooms, showers, and toilets for your comfort.
5 Tips for Planning Your Own Underwater Maternity Session with Angelina Pilarinos Photography

- Book at the right time – Schedule your session for when you will be between 30-34 weeks pregnant and your bump is well-defined but you’re still comfortable moving around.
- Bring the right clothing – Flowing dresses or fabrics like chiffon and organza work best underwater. Consider renting a maternity gown, I can help with rental options.
- Practice being comfortable underwater – Try holding your breath and opening your eyes in a pool before your session.
- Trust the process – Many clients who feel “awkward” on camera find the water liberating and natural. Relaxation is the key to great photos.
- Plan for rest afterward – The session can be tiring, so don’t schedule other activities for the same day.

FAQs About Underwater Maternity Photography

1. Do I need to know how to swim?
Basic comfort in water helps, but you don’t need to be a strong swimmer. We work in shallow areas where you can stand if needed.
2. What if I can’t open my eyes underwater?
Many beautiful shots work with closed eyes! We can practice together, and most clients find it gets easier with a few tries.
3. How many photos will I get?
Most clients select 10-15 final images, which I then carefully edit to bring out their underwater beauty.
4. Is it safe during pregnancy?
Yes! The pool is kept at a comfortable temperature, and we take frequent breaks. I always have a safety swimmer with me who is there to help in case of an emergency. Always check with your doctor first if you have any pregnancy complications.
5. What should I bring?
Bring a swimsuit or bra and underwear to wear under your maternity gowns, a towel, and any special items you might want in photos. I can help arrange gown rentals too!
