Why an Underwater Maternity Shoot Is Unlike Any Other Pregnancy Photo

Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary things a human body can do. And yet so many women spend it feeling uncomfortable, self-conscious, and reluctant to be photographed at all. An underwater maternity shoot changes that completely.

I’ve photographed pregnant women underwater and watched something shift the moment they get into the water. The weight they’ve been carrying for months — literally and emotionally — lifts. They float. They breathe. And when they see their images, they see themselves the way they deserve to be seen: powerful, beautiful, and utterly remarkable.

If you’re pregnant and you’ve been wondering whether an underwater shoot is right for you, this post is for you.

What Makes It So Different

Traditional maternity photos are beautiful. But underwater maternity portraits are something else entirely.

The water does things that no studio, no beach, and no golden hour can replicate. Flowing fabric moves around a pregnant belly in a way that looks almost otherworldly. Light filters down through the surface and wraps around every curve. The reflection above creates a mirror image that doubles the magic of every single frame.

And for you, as the person in the water? The pool takes the pressure off your belly in a way that nothing else does at this stage of pregnancy. Many of my clients tell me it’s the first time in months they’ve felt genuinely weightless. That relief, that ease, shows up in the images.

When to Book

I recommend booking your underwater maternity session between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. This is the sweet spot: your bump is beautifully defined, your body tells the full story of the baby you’re growing, and you still have the energy to enjoy the experience.

Beyond 36 weeks, fatigue and physical discomfort can make it harder to get the most out of your shoot. And before 28 weeks, your bump may not be fully defined to make these images so striking.

If you’re unsure where you’ll land, book early. We can always adjust the date as your pregnancy progresses.

“But I Can’t Hold My Breath Very Long”

This is the most common thing I hear from pregnant women before their shoot, and I want to address it directly: you do not need to have a long breath-hold to get stunning images.

Most of my best maternity shots are taken in the shallow end of the pool, just below the surface. We’re talking seconds underwater, not minutes. I work with your breath, not against it. We go at your pace, we take as many breaks as you need, and I will never ask you to do anything that doesn’t feel comfortable.

Sarah, one of my clients, put it perfectly: “Angelina was super patient with my inability to stay underwater for long. It was actually a really fun experience and I’m glad I have some lovely images to capture my pregnant belly.”

If Sarah could do it, so can you.

“I Can’t Open My Eyes Underwater”

You don’t have to. Closed eyes underwater can create some of the most serene, dreamlike images in my entire portfolio. There is no wrong way to do this. For those who do want to open their eyes, I have eye drops on hand to help with any chlorine irritation. But it is absolutely never a requirement.

“I Won’t Look Good Underwater”

I hear this one too, and I understand why. Pregnancy can make women feel far from camera-ready, especially in the later weeks when your body has changed so dramatically.

But here is what I know from being behind the lens: a pregnant body underwater is one of the most breathtaking things I have ever photographed. The water is generous. It softens, it glows, it celebrates every curve. The images don’t look like what you see in the mirror. They look like artwork.

Vanessa, who did her shoot at 33 weeks, said it best: “A lot of my friends have mentioned that they’ve never seen maternity photos like this before and I love looking at them so much. This is something I will treasure forever.”

Is It Safe?

Your safety and your baby’s safety are my absolute priority. Every shoot takes place in a private, heated pool with a qualified safety swimmer in the water with us at all times. We start in the shallow end where you can stand, and we never go further than you are comfortable with.

Before your shoot, I always recommend checking in with your midwife or obstetrician, particularly if you have any pregnancy complications. For a straightforward pregnancy, an underwater shoot between 28 and 36 weeks is a gentle, low-impact experience. But your doctor’s advice always comes first.

What to Wear

I have a full wardrobe of flowing dresses, skirts, and fabrics that photograph beautifully underwater and are designed to move with a pregnant body. We choose everything together at your design consultation before the shoot, so nothing is left to guesswork on the day.

Partners and other children are also very welcome to be part of your shoot if you’d like to include them.

More Than Just Photos

The images are extraordinary. But what my maternity clients almost always tell me is that the experience itself is what they didn’t expect. Min, who did a couples maternity shoot with her partner, described it as: “Professional and patient. The results are amazing. We love our photos.” And Kristy called hers “a once-in-a-lifetime experience I’ll cherish forever.”

That’s what I’m here to create for you: not just images that document your pregnancy, but an experience you’ll look back on as one of the most beautiful things you did during this time in your life.
